Analysis on Peter Singer's Essay
Analysis: What are the most effective aspects of Singer's Argument?
In Peter Singer's argument the most effective aspects were the way he was influencing people to donate. He created all those scenarios to kind of give people a logical view of how many of us are not helping others. Emotion was very strong in his argument a reader can tell right away how interested he was in the topic he was discussing. Peter Singer also used skills and devices that helped him get his message across to everyone. The use of rhetorical questions, repetition, Imagery are very present throughout the essay. Rhetorical questions are used a lot when he wants to get his reader thinking about what they are doing right now and what has been done. For example he asked "How should you judge yourself if you don't do it?" which can basically means that if you don't donate your just like Dora and Bob who chose the material stuff instead of saving a child's life. Repetition was used to show the significance in the topic. Repeating certain things multiple times. Like for example the number 200 which is the amount that he wants everyone to donate to the organization. He was emphasizing that it was important to send that money to them so they can help a child out. His use of imagery also helped to convey an effective message because it gave the reader a clear image of what happens when you don't help a child out. For example in the situation of Dora and Bob where they decided not to help a child out and put them in a horrible situation. The writer did describe it very well what was occurring in both situations to give us an understanding of what he was trying to communicate to us. In my opinion I think he is pushing people too much to donate. The reason why I say this is because we all have an understanding to the idea of donating this essay wasn't the first time we had heard about this topic and I think if certain people don't donate its because they don't want to. Which means that if people really don't want to donate it doesn't matter if they read this essay or ten others it wont really change anything. The essay did give me a sense of guilty because we often don't donate and sometimes children do really need it and we ultimately decide not to. The essay itself was pretty effective in my opinion it provided with enough facts and the author was able to put his own personal touch to it by putting emotion into his words. The examples could have been a little different but he did point out his overall concept and that was to get more people to donate to the overseas aid organization. Many people that can actually donate a lot more chose not to but it might make a huge difference in a child's life.
